Dr. Mathavan collaborated with Dr. Bernard Lown, a renowned cardiologist from Boston and a Nobel laureate, on a study of the health status of 1,500 physicians. The study, MAPCHES, found that 70% of the physicians had metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The findings were presented at the World Congress of Cardiology in Buenos Aires in 2008 and published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology in 2009. Dr. Mathavan is currently involved in another research project, Ladanendal Heart Study, which is studying the health of 1,000 people from rural areas.
